"If such a place did exist, maybe we could all live in peace, without the need to fight."
— Rex

Elysium (Japanese: 楽園, Rakuen, lit. Eden, Paradise) is a location in 异度神剑 2. It is a fabled paradise supposedly located on top of the World Tree in the center of Alrest. Rex and Pyra's quest to Elysium, and the struggles they face to reach it, form the main premise of the story.

The Aegises are able to visit an imaginary version of Elysium in their dreams, created from their own memories. This distant memory appears 复数部位 times during the course of the game.

Story

During the year 20XX, Elysium functioned as the 住宅区 of a 调查·挑战 institution located in orbit: the First Low Orbit Station, Rhadamanthus. After the Conduit was activated, all the inhabitants of the station disappeared, and Elysium became a barren wasteland devoid of life.

As 新生 began to settle in Alrest, legends of Elysium spread among the people. Amalthus followed the legends and climbed the World Tree with the expectation of reaching Elysium and meeting the 設計士. However, despite being able to reach it, Amalthus found Elysium to be empty, and brought back with him the Core Crystals of the Aegises as proof that he had been to the divine realm.

Due to the psychological scars that they had suffered during the Aegis War, Pyra and Mythra wished to go back to Elysium so that they could ask the 設計士 to allow them to die, as their condition as Blades made them immortal. They asked Rex, a leftherian salvager who wished to reach the place of legends, to take them there on the promise that, by doing so, he would be able to save Alrest, as the Titans that formed the land were beginning to die out.

Once the party reaches Elysium, they find it in ruins, but by following the sound of a church bell they find the abandoned Old Temple. Inside of its altar they uncover a hidden path to the 設計士's Room, where they meet Klaus.

As Artifice Aion is defeated and Klaus begins to disappear, he removes the Cloud Sea and instructs the Titans of Alrest to form a new land in the ocean of the old world. Once the Conduit disappears following Klaus' death, the World Tree begins to crumble. To save Alrest, Pneuma uses the last of Aion's power to annihilate Rhadamantus and the Beanstalk, destroying the ruined Elysium in the process.

As the party returns to Alrest and eventually reach the new titan landmass on Azurda's back, Klaus' final gift to the world, they realize that this land was the true Elysium they were searching for.

"So Elysium was... here all along..."
— Rex

The Legend of Elysium

Indoline mural depicting the creation of Alrest

The legends spread through Alrest stated that humanity had once lived on Elysium along the 設計士, but that they had been expelled to the surface due to 未知 reasons. The legend also states that Titans were sent by the 設計士 for 人类 to live in after he took 可怜 on the them due to the tough circumstances of living on the surface, and that this was how Alrest came to be.

Despite not seeming like so at first, several points of the legend of Elysium could be identified with elements present in the real story. 人类 did once live at the top of the World Tree, and literally vanished after the Conduit, a "divine gift", yielded unexpected results when activated. Due to the destruction caused in the surface of the planet by the battle that had taken place, as well as the Conduit's activation, Klaus recreated life, and Titans were one of the first steps of his plan, being sent to the surface in the form of Core Crystals.

Dialogue

Rex Rex So this is...Elysium...?
Uhh... No use pondering it now. Let's keep moving.
Nia Nia Is this Elysium...?
It kind of looks like Morytha to me...
Tora This place feel very lonely place... Can place like this really be Elysium?
Marvelous technology used here, but not look hospitable for living, meh...
Mòrag Mòrag Is this really Elysium?
A place more barren than Mor Ardain... The mind reels.
Zeke Zeke We've done well to make it this far... Who knew this is what was waiting.

Rex Rex This looks like a pipe organ...
But it's not making any sound now...
Nia Nia Wow, that's a huge organ.
Oh, but it's busted... Shame, I wanted to play a little tune.
Tora Oh! This look like organ!
Some things same here as in world of 虎 and friends...
Mòrag Mòrag The organ... How majestic it must have sounded, before...
Zeke Zeke Hm, no go. Won't make a sound...
Sad, really. If it was still working, I could have given everyone a taste of the Zekenator's Fifth...

Rex Rex Is this where the people who lived in Elysium would come to play?
I don't really get how to use any of these...
Nia Nia How do you use these things?
Are they like, training equipment or something?
Tora Meh-meh-meh? What this place for?
Training ground for Drivers maybe?
Mòrag Mòrag Was this...some kind of park, perhaps?
I have never seen anything like these structures in the records of Alrest...
Zeke Zeke I guess this is like, a park.
But everything here's super 傻劲. Not made out of wood, that's for sure.

Rex Rex This looks like...a water tower?
梅be this place used to be covered in trees and flowers like Gormott...
Nia Nia This is a water tower, right? What's one of those doing here?
Tora 虎 seen tower like this in Gormott!
Was Elysium like Gormott long time ago?
Mòrag Mòrag I suppose the people of Elysium stored their water supply in towers, just like we do ourselves.
Perhaps our societies were not as different as they might seem.
Zeke Zeke If it was in Alrest, I'd say this was for storing water...
But who knows what the people living here might've stored in it.

Rex Rex Looks like there's no way through...
I wonder what's past here...
It's the highest point of all Alrest, but there's so much space... It's kinda unbelievable.
Nia Nia No way past, it seems...
Such a massive space... How did people get around it...?
Tora Bunch of rubble? It no match for Poppi's power!
...Ah, no, 虎 take it back. Please pay no mind to 虎.
虎 realize, only thing we find behind rubble is more rubble...
Mòrag Mòrag To make such a great gaping hole in the rock wall... Incredible...
The technology here gives one pause... But it was still no match for the power of time passing.
Zeke Zeke The construction of this wall reminds me of the 傻劲 walls of Theosoir...
But even beyond it, I'm sure nothing is waiting 其它 than more rubble-strewn desolation, same as here...

Etymology

In Greek literature, Elysium refers to an afterlife paradise separate from the underworld. It was created by the 神 for heroes and mortals related to the 神. Unlike in the underworld, those admitted into Elysium were said to have a 高兴 and blessed afterlife.
